§05Studio

An engineering studio with a drafting table.

S&S Labs is a technology company in Kigali, Rwanda, working with organizations across Africa and internationally. We design, engineer and run digital systems, and we approach each one the way an architect approaches a building: drawn carefully before it is built, and built to last.

§1The brand line

Swift & Secure Systems

Swift
Speed that comes from design, not haste: clear architecture, short feedback loops, automation where it removes toil, and systems that respond quickly for the people who use them.
Secure
Security and reliability as properties of the system from the first decision: least privilege, protected data, audit trails, tested recovery, and nothing claimed that has not been measured.
Systems
We think in systems: how software, data, infrastructure, people and process fit together. A good component in a bad system is still a bad system.

§2Engineering principles

Five rules we work by.

  1. 01

    Architecture before code

We draw the system, its boundaries and its data before we build it, and keep the drawing true as it changes.

  2. 02

    Working software early

Short increments in a real environment. You see the system working long before it is finished.

  3. 03

    Secure by default

Least privilege, encryption, audit trails and dependency hygiene are the starting point, not a final phase.

  4. 04

    Measure, then claim

Accuracy, performance and reliability are measured against agreed targets before anyone calls them done.

  5. 05

    Built to be operated

Monitoring, runbooks and documentation ship with the system, so your team can run it, or we can run it with you.

§3Innovation and reliability

Imagination, held to an engineering standard.

New technology is only useful when it is dependable. We like the new: AI, distributed ledgers, digital twins, unusual interfaces. We also know most of the value is in making something work every day for years.

So we explore in time-boxed prototypes with honest go/no-go recommendations, and we put into production only what we can test, secure, monitor and support. The Systems Lab on this site is a small example of that thinking, made visible.

§4Problem-solving process

From first conversation to running system.

  1. 01

    Discover

Understand the problem, the people and the systems. Agree what success means.

  2. 02

    Architect

Design the target system and a delivery plan in useful increments.

  3. 03

    Build

Ship working software in short iterations, tested and observable.

  4. 04

    Operate

Go live, measure, improve, then hand over or run it together.

§5Technical standards

What every system gets.

  • 01Code review on every change
  • 02Automated tests and continuous integration
  • 03Infrastructure as code, reproducible environments
  • 04Security baseline: dependency scanning, secrets management, least privilege
  • 05Observability: metrics, logs and alerts from day one
  • 06Accessibility to WCAG 2.2 AA for public interfaces
  • 07Documentation and runbooks as deliverables
  • 08Architecture decisions recorded and reviewable

Tell us what you need to build.

Describe the problem in a few sentences. We reply with questions, a first view of the approach, and who you would work with.
